The official logo for the DARPA Subterranean Challenge is inspired by the Platonic Solid -- the cube -- for earth. Since antiquity, understanding terra and what lies beneath continues to intrigue and challenge us to explore this hidden domain.
The perspecitive styling of the logo captures the distinctly three-dimensional nature, i.e., not just length and width but also depth, of the underground environments critical to the SubT Challenge.
The four wall of the Cube provide the structure and frame, similar to how the four Challenge events - the Tunnel Circuit, Urban Circuit, Cave Circuit, and the Final Event -- create opportunities for advancing the state of the art in robotic technologies.
The embedded maze represents the mapping, navigation, and search objectives of the SubT Challenge. If one looks carefully, the letters "S-U-B-T" can be found in the maze.
